Aligned Sustainability is committed to supporting organizations that are under-resourced in sustainability or navigating periods of change. Through fractional services, businesses can tackle sustainability—all without the commitment of a full-time hire.
What is Fractional?
Fractional hiring is a modern, agile staffing approach that gives organizations access to executive-level expertise on a part-time or project basis. This flexible, cost-effective resourcing alternative to full-time hires delivers tailored leadership that aligns with your organization’s needs and budget.
Fractional Chief Sustainability Officers (CSOs) or Directors bring the same level of dedication as full-time leaders but scale their involvement to suit your objectives.
-
Lead strategic planning and sustainability program development.
Align plans with the business model to improve operations and strengthen market positioning.
Build capacity and navigate resource constraints to deliver impactful outcomes.
Address ESG sales requests and procurement programs.
Meet sustainability disclosure and reporting obligations.
Engage executive team, investor relations, and board.
What are the Benefits for Companies?
Fractional sustainability resourcing offers a unique opportunity for companies to establish and drive the sustainability agenda but provides the flexibility of a variable cost structure that can easily scale up or down as needs evolve. For businesses still assessing their sustainability resourcing requirements, fractional leadership is an ideal approach to gaining clarity and traction.
This model ensures sustainability is not treated as just compliance or reporting but as a critical business function—similar to IT—or an integrated set of activities like Environmental, Health, and Safety (EHS). A strong fractional leader addresses the strategic, operational, and regulatory dimensions of sustainability, creating lasting value for the organization.
-

Fractional Experience
With over 20 years of leadership in corporate sustainability, I’ve played pivotal roles in more than 50 ESG and sustainability programs. My experience includes partnering with CEOs, CFOs, COOs, and CSOs and stepping in as a stand-in Director to lead sustainability programs through development and critical transitions. These fractional and staff augmentation roles have focused on various complex sectors, including industrial/manufacturing, transportation, aviation, and energy—industries that face real challenges and high stakes when it comes to sustainability.
As a fractional leader, I blend a consulting mindset with in-house delivery, ensuring strategies and programs are scoped, scheduled, and budgeted with precision. My approach builds trust, accountability, and momentum, helping organizations navigate resource constraints and achieve impactful outcomes.
Fractional Success Model
Bringing It All Together
Fractional sustainability leadership is about strategically addressing your organization’s needs with the right expertise, focus, and structure. Here are four key aspects that define a successful engagement:
Experience: Gaining the capabilities of a CSO means engaging a seasoned professional with cross-functional and multidisciplinary expertise in sustainability and business operations, leveraging that expertise to quickly assess challenges and deliver solutions.
Commitment: Fractional leaders are more than consultants—they engage as fully committed team members, aligning with your organization’s culture and goals and build relationships like an employee, because they need that mindset to be successful.
Programmatic Needs: Your organization may be facing ESG regulatory or market pressures or pursuing ambitious sustainability goals, but limited resources may be hindering your ability to address these challenges effectively.
Resourcing Model: While fractional engagements are often contract-based, they are filling a critical position in a scalable and adaptable way, providing flexibility to address sustainability challenges without a long-term financial commitment.
